Game Marketing Budget Calculator for Indie Developers

Most indie developers know they need to market their game. Visibility equals wishlists, and wishlists equal money.

What they are less sure about is how much to spend on it. And that uncertainty can be just as costly as the wrong decision. Hear us out. Spend too little and your launch goes unnoticed. Spend in the wrong places, and the budget goes “poof”. We’ve seen it happen; we understand it, which is why we created this free calculator.

Using real campaign data from indie and mid-tier launches across PC, mobile, and console, it gives you a grounded estimate of what your marketing budget should actually look like. It is based on your platform, genre, and development investment. It isn't your generic formula but a starting point that reflects how games like yours can be marketed.

What does it cover?

The calculator takes five inputs, your platform, genre, development stage, development investment, and preferred level of support. It then uses that information to generate a recommended budget range tailored to your game.

Each input matters for a specific reason. Platform determines cost structure and audience behaviour across three tracks: PC/Steam, Mobile (iOS & Android), and Console.

  • PC/Steam: covering paid social, content creation, influencer, PR, and community building across five budget tiers from entry-level indie launches to publisher-grade campaigns.
  • Mobile (iOS & Android): covering user acquisition across Meta, Google UAC (AdMob and Play Store), TikTok, and Apple Search Ads, with CPI benchmarks by genre and UA phase modelling.
  • Console: covering paid social, influencer, and platform activity for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox releases, structured around two tiers reflecting the different realities of indie and professional console launches

The remaining inputs each play their own role. Genre affects how competitive your category is and what paid acquisition realistically costs. Development stage shapes what kind of campaign is possible and how much runway you have. Development investment is the strongest single predictor of appropriate marketing spend. And support level determines whether the budget is structured around a DIY approach or full agency execution.

The calculator does not cover Chinese storefronts or the Chinese mobile ecosystem (WeChat, Douyin, TapTap), which operate on an entirely separate infrastructure inaccessible to Western developers without local publishing partnerships.

A note on the numbers

The benchmarks in this calculator are drawn from real campaign data across indie and mid-tier game launches, agency spend records, and publicly available industry research. They represent what campaigns in each category typically cost to run effectively.

Marketing costs vary significantly based on factors no calculator can fully account for—creative asset quality, existing community size, release timing, and how well your Steam page or store listing converts. Use these figures as a grounded starting point, not a fixed prescription.

On the relationship between development and marketing spend: a commonly referenced rule of thumb suggests allocating between 20% and 50% of your development budget to marketing. In practice, this is most useful for mid-tier projects. At the lower end of indie development, percentage-based figures often produce numbers too small for effective paid campaigns. At the higher end, certain fixed costs like PR and creative production do not scale linearly. The calculator uses development investment as a signal of commercial ambition rather than applying a fixed ratio mechanically.

Is PR worth including in my indie game marketing budget?

+
  • It depends on your game and release type. The games press landscape has contracted significantly, and most editorial coverage is concentrated on AAA releases. PR retains value for certain release types and review formats. For many indie titles though, PR should be a supporting element rather than a primary driver of sales.

Can this calculator account for my specific game?

+
  • No calculator can fully account for your specific situation. Your actual marketing costs will be shaped by your creative quality, existing audience size, release timing, storefront conversion rate, and dozens of other variables that require human assessment. How current are the costs in this calculator?

+
  • The figures reflect current industry benchmarks across CPMs, CPIs, and influencer rates, and are reviewed periodically. That said, channel costs shift with market conditions, platform algorithm changes, and competitive pressure.

Does a high wishlist count or strong install volume mean my game will make money?

+
  • Not necessarily. Wishlists and installs are acquisition metrics, not revenue metrics. Retention, monetisation, and player lifetime value determine commercial success. A game with 50,000 wishlists and poor conversion will underperform a game with 10,000 wishlists and a strong store page.

Does spending more on marketing guarantee better sales?

+
  • Not directly. Even well-funded, well-executed campaigns for genuinely good games can underperform. Discovery on platforms like Steam and the App Store is influenced by algorithmic factors, timing, review scores, and community momentum that marketing spend alone cannot manufacture.
